"The Legend of Korra" Review: The "Avatar" Gameplay
The "Avatar" series, for those who does not know anything about it, is a world of people connecting with the environment and has the power to control and manipulate the elements of earth, water, air or fire through martial arts. There is only one person known as Avatar can use all of the four elements and balance a world in constant elemental conflict. "The Legend of Korra" TV series is a follow-up to "Avatar: The Last Airbender", set 70 years later.
According to Kotaku, "The Legend of Korra" attempts to translate the show's main appeals - mesmerising action scenes and fun, believable characters - into a combo-heavy action game. The story's plot points and set pieces originally came from "Korra" Season Two. The only non-Korra character present is Tenzen's daughter, Jinora. The fights in the game just rely on two buttons and timings only. Water is the power that can hit the enemy from a pretty long distance, Fire is great for shooting up-close and personal. Earth on the other hand is a slow power but very powerful and finally, Air can slice through crowds.
Meanwhile, they said the combat in the game is a little bit inconvenient. As the game starts, you are required to unlock all the four powers individually, one by one. At the end of the game, you will encounter two big bosses and almost covers your sight because they are too massive, giving you a hard time to attack the enemy. They also have descendants that attack you from under making you surely damaged. The game is so hard to manipulate making you just attack and attack while hoping to win in the match.
The powerful Avatar Mode doesn't show up until near the end of your first game. Activating it allows Korra to wreck everything in sight. Avatar mode allows Korra to go all Captain Planet on enemies, firing a ton of elemental attacks. This mode gives you a nice antidote like how out-of-control combat normally feels. But you don't get it until right before the final boss part of the fight.
In addition to all the elemental fighting, Korra offers another type of gameplay. These are segments where you will ride Korra's polar bear dog, Naga. These segments are generally filler and culminate with what is easily the most infuriating moment in the entire game.
Naga segments only have simple three-lane obstacle-avoidance marathons; dodge side to side, duck fences and leap gaps. But near the end, those mechanics are applied to a boss fight against three giant robots.
If you are a huge fan of the "Avatar" universe, "The Legend of Korra" might be a little bit disappointing. The series has so many great ideas, locations, and characters that might be great if it's been part of the game. "Avatar" maybe deserves better than this version of the game. Because of all of this, according to Euro Gamer, the developer of the game no longer provide quality-guaranteed games.
