Metal Band Static-X Singer Wayne Static Dead at Age 48, Musical Community Speaks Out
Wayne Static, the former frontman and found of metal band Static-X, was found dead on Saturday (Nov 1) at the age of 48. Billboard confirmed his death with his publicist.
He had gone solo from his band since 2009 and was gearing up for a co-headlining tour with Powerman 5000 and Drowning Pool. A tweet from Static's official Twitter handle was posted some six hours before the news was announced.
Wayne formed Static-X in Los Angeles, CA in 1994. They released their debut album Wisconsin Death Trip in 1999, which went platinum. They released five more albums, ending with 2009's Cult of Static. Since then, Wayne had been pursuing a solo career.
Several of his musical peer have spoken out on social media since hearing of Wayne's passing. There is no cause of death, but it seems evidenced from people that knew him, that this was a struggle he dealt with.
Here are what a few had to say:
Jacoby Shaddix (PAPA ROACH): "RIP Wayne.... This is so sad. Too many musicians are dying from overdoses. I'm serious, addiction is real and takes fools out. No one is invincible. So glad I live a sober life today. The number of friends that I have lost to addiction is crazy. If you are struggling with addiction, get some help before it's too late. I know drugs and partying are part of the 'rock 'n' roll lifestyle,' but how many more gotta die??? F*** the lifestyle, I want life!!!! See you on the other side, Wayne...."
Billy Corgan (SMASHING PUMPKINS): "I am shocked to hear that Wayne Wells (Wayne Static) has passed away. I played with him in his first band, DEEP BLUE DREAM, in 1987/88. He was a real gentleman, and loved music (and KISS, Ace in particular). Even had his the hood of his car painted with the KISS logo."
Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR): "I am absolutely devastated to hear about Wayne Static's death. A good man and a good friend. My thoughts are with his family and friends."
Aaron Lewis (STAIND): "My heart goes out to Wayne's family. He was my friend. Many shows and tours together. I'm stunned and shocked. RIP my dear friend #speechless"
KORN frontman Jonathan Davis said: "Rest in peace, Wayne. I'm speechless right now. I'm losing too many of my friends. I'll see you on the other side, brother."
Fred Durst (LIMP BIZKIT): "RIP Wayne Richard Wells. His contributions are timeless."
