Rascal Flatts and Selah's "God Bless the Broken Road" Becomes a Faith-Based Movie

"Bless the Broken Road," a song that speaks of God's providence over the ups and downs of our lives, was a hit for both Selah and Rascal Flatts. Now, the hit ballad will be a feature film. The song has been chosen as the inspiration for a faith-based movie titled God Bless the Broken Road, to be directed by Harold Cronk, who also directed the faith-based film God's Not Dead.
Deadline reports the film will tell the story of a woman whose husband was killed serving in Afghanistan and has to then raise her daughter on her own.
"I felt it was important to show someone in a crisis of faith in the face of overwhelming loss," says Cronk, who co-wrote the script with Jennifer Dornbush.
The movie is expected to be released in late 2016 or early 2017.
"God Bless the Broken Road," the single, was co-written by Marcus Hummon, Bobby Boyd and Jeff Hanna in 1994. Singer-songwriter Marcus Hummon co-wrote the song with Jeff Hanna (of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and Bobby Boyd. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded it for the 1994 album Acoustic.
One year later, Hummon covered the song for his debut album All in Good Time for Columbia Records. His rendition includes backing vocals from Hanna and Matraca Berg. Michael McCall of New Country magazine thought that Hummon's rendition was the best track on the album.
Sons of the Desert recorded its own version of the song, for a planned second album on Epic Records that would have been released in 1998. This album was not released, due to a dispute between the band and its label. Since then, many artists have recorded the song including Melodie Crittenden, Geoff Moore, Selah, Jamie Slocum, Carrie Underwood, Buddy Greene, and Rascal Flatts.
Selahcovered the song in 2006 on the album Bless the Broken Road: The Duets Album featuring a duet vocal from Crittenden. Also released as a single, Selah's version peaked at number five on the Hot Christian Songs charts.
