Rabbi Greg Hershberg Explains Why Leviticus is Applicable in His New Book

In his new book, "A Life for God: A Rabbi's Analysis of Life, the Cross, and Eternity" (Aneko Press), Rabbi Greg Hershberg offers new insights into one of the most neglected and misunderstood books in the Bible. Hershberg points out that 20 of the 27 chapters in Leviticus are direct words from God, and the sacrifices explained in detail need to be studied, not just by Jews, but by Christians.
"People claim to want to hear God speak to them," says Hershberg, who leads the Beth Judah Messianic Congregation in Macon, Georgia. "Leviticus is a book where God is speaking directly on almost every page. If we think this is just an ancient Jewish sacrificial rules and regulations manual to maintain holiness in everyday life, we miss the point. God wants Christians to be holy too."
Diving deep into a study of the five unique offerings described in Leviticus, Hershberg connects each of them to Yeshua (Jesus). He then describes the five types of wounds that Jesus endured during the crucifixion. Hershberg believes that these Old Testament references are crucial to understanding the mission of Jesus.
"To love and appreciate Leviticus, we need to understand how the sacrifices in this book point to the ultimate sacrifice; they point to Yeshua."
"A Life for God" also highlights Psalm 22 which Hershberg describes as being a "prophetic masterpiece of the suffering and death of Messiah."
Hershberg grew up as one of the "few kids from a poor Jewish family from New York City." His father died when he was just 15, and he later became involved in a cult and wandered far from his Jewish faith. While honeymooning in Israel, Hershberg had a vision at the Mount of Transfiguration which he describes as a "trance, much like Paul and Peter experienced." He had a vision of Jesus/Yeshua, whom he had never even heard mentioned in any synagogue. The experience changed his life, and he was later ordained through the International Association of Messianic Congregations and Synagogues. He leads Beth Yeshua International which has become a ministry/training center with congregations and schools in India, Kenya, Australia, Germany, Israel, as well as America.
Hershberg says "A Life for God" is a book that will, ultimately, help believers across denominational lines discover their true purpose.
"All believers are called to obey God. In fact, this is how we show our love towards God. In order to accomplish this, we have to fall in love with God. In order to fall in love with God, we have to grasp an understanding of just how much God loves us. To do this we have to go to the cross and dig deep into the sacrifice. The whole idea of the book is to help believers, and non-believers alike, fall head over heels in love with God."
