Miley Cyrus 'Bangerz Tour' NBC Special 2014 is Ratings Flop, 'Wrecking Ball' Singer Popularity Slipping?
Miley Cyrus hasn't lacked attention this year, from her MTV VMA performance to her seductive music videos. The shock-value trend of 'wait and see what I do next' has been working for the pop singer, until this weekend.
On Sunday, NBC aired "Mily Cyrus: Bangerz Tour", which was a two-hour even in prime time. Only, her fans didn't flock to see more about the much hyped tour. According to early numbers from Nielsen, the special averaged 2 million viewers overall and a rating of 0.7 among 18- to 49-year-olds, which is the demographic most desired by advertisers and would be the audience for 99% of Miley fans.
The two-hour event showed concert and backstage footage from her current Bangerz Tour 2014. The special was taped in several cities including Barcelona, Spain, and Lisbon.
CBS' "Big Brother" was the top-rated broadcast show on a low-rated Sunday night, ending the of the July Fourth holiday weekend. ABC's "Rising Star" that earned a 1.0 in young women demographic among women aged 18-34 beating the Cyrus special as well which scored a 0.9 in the same category.
Maybe it was just a slow weekend for television, but does this say something about the 'Wrecking Ball' singer? Is her popularity slipping among the public? Everyone knows that you can only use shock value for so long before people know that there is nothing left to show.
Cyrus is a very talented young woman and showed examples, like her 2 music performances on "SNL" last season, that she can perform and be captivating without using shock and just letting her talent shine through. Maybe she will get back to focusing on her talents and letting the side show antics move behind her.
