Halle Berry Makes Her Return to TV as Mysteriously Pregnant Astronaut in CBS's Sci-Fi Drama "Extant," Which Premiered July 9
Halle Berry has not been seen on the silver screen for fifteen years. Rather, she has been busy being a mom to her two children, playing the luminous Storm in the "X-Men" films, and taking on the role of a Bond girl. However, now the multi-faceted actress has returned to television, playing the main character in this summer's sci-fi drama "Extant."
Berry plays astronaut Molly Woods, who returns from a 13-month long solo mission only to realize that she is far from solo...she is pregnant. Woods struggles to readjust to her life at home with her husband John Woods (portrayed by Goran Visnjic), who is a robotics scientist, while attempting to keep her mysterious pregnancy a secret. Oh, and did I mention she also has a robotic son (played by Pierce Gagnon)?
It's "Gravity" meets "Rosemary's Baby," and yet it is also so much more. Berry's presence draws the eye and holds the attention in a quiet yet powerful way. The 13-episode miniseries takes place in a futuristic society, a setting new and exciting for most viewers, given its uniqueness from the majority of what we see on TV nowadays.
Much of the first episode is spent setting up this not-so-distant-future setting, but probably the most important part of the first episode is Molly's flashback immediately after her friend and doctor Sam Barton (played by Camryn Manheim) informs her that she is somehow pregnant. While on board the space station "Seraphim," Molly has an encounter with her ex-husband, who is long-dead. When Molly tries to rouse herself from her dream, she realizes that it is not a dream; this is real.
If "Extant" continues along the road it is going, it will undoubtedly be a great success. 9.4 million viewers tuned in to watch its premiere on July 9. Extant aires on CBS on Wednesdays at 9/8c.
