The earliest known manuscript of the song dates to around 1751. However, some sources suggest that the song might have been written earlier, possibly in the 17th century.
The English translation of "Adeste Fideles" that is commonly sung today was done by Frederick Oakeley in the mid-19th century. The melody is often attributed to John Reading, an English composer, but its exact origins are not definitively known.
