Joel Osteen Responds to the Shooting at Lakewood Church

On Sunday afternoon (Feb 11), in between services, a woman, aged about 35, entered Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. The woman, wearing a trench coat and a backpack, began firing the weapon.
She was accompanied by a five year-old boy. She shot the child and a 57-year-old man was shot in the leg. The five-year-old boy was also hit and is in a critical condition. A Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission agent and an off-duty Houston Police Department officer returned fire and the woman died.
Before her death, the woman had stated she was carrying a "bomb." However, no explosives were found. She was also spraying a "substance" on the ground during the incident.
Lakewood Church's senior pastor Joel Osteen said he was "devastated" about the incident. "We've been here 65 years, to have someone shooting in your church," he said.
"We have no idea why these things happen, but we know God's in control. We're going to pray for that little five-year-old boy. Pray for the lady that was deceased, her family and all."
Tauren Wells, who leads worship at the mega-church, laments, "Carrying my Lakewood family in my heart tonight. I'm grateful to hear of the preparation of security teams and swift action of law enforcement. May God be close and his people filled with defiant courage to keep showing up!"
