Newsboys Owner and Family Sued for $5.4 Million in Defamation and Conspiracy Lawsuit

A new lawsuit filed in Hickman County, Tennessee, alleges that Wes Campbell-owner of the Grammy-nominated Christian rock band Newsboys-and four of his family members are responsible for defamation, conspiracy, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and obstruction of justice.
The lawsuit, filed on June 3 by Randall Schrum, a former pastor at Hilltop Fellowship House of Prayer in Primm Springs, TN, seeks $5.4 million in damages-$1.8 million in compensatory and $3.6 million in punitive damages. According to the filing, the Campbells allegedly orchestrated a campaign of false accusations that led to a police raid and widespread emotional trauma.
The legal action stems from a series of events beginning with a disrupted church service allegedly involving members of the Campbell family. The complaint describes further incidents including claims of "demonic assaults" and "spoken curses." Schrum asserts that the defendants filed a knowingly false report of child abuse that led to the wrongful raid of a separate family's home, resulting in their need to go into hiding for months.
This lawsuit surfaces amid broader controversy surrounding the Newsboys. On June 4, The Roys Report published an investigative article featuring allegations of sexual assault against former lead singer Michael Tait. As a result, the band has reportedly been dropped by Capitol Christian Records and removed from several major Christian radio networks, including K-LOVE.
Further complicating matters, Steve Campbell-Newsboys' tour manager and Wes Campbell's brother-is accused of helping cover up a 2014 sexual assault allegation involving Tait and crew member Matt Brewer. Both Steve Campbell and Brewer have denied all allegations.
The lawsuit marks a significant moment for one of Christian music's most influential bands, raising serious questions about internal accountability and leadership.
