Newsboys Owner Wes Campbell Resigns from Gospel Music Association Board

In the wake of mounting controversy surrounding Newsboys and former frontman Michael Tait, Wes Campbell-longtime manager and owner of the band-has officially stepped down from the board of the Gospel Music Association (GMA). Campbell also confirmed that his brother, Steve Campbell, has been placed on leave from his role with the Newsboys organization, pending further review of serious allegations.
The developments follow a series of investigative reports detailing a 2014 sexual misconduct allegation against Tait by former Newsboys crew member Matt Brewer. Steve Campbell, who was tour manager at the time, has been accused of covering up the incident. Tait has denied the allegations, and no charges have been filed. Steve Campbell has also publicly denied any wrongdoing.
In a statement to ChurchLeaders, Wes Campbell said:
"We believe in accountability and due process. In light of recent concerns, Steve has been placed on leave. We are taking these matters seriously and continue to review all aspects of the situation."
Campbell further confirmed his decision to resign from the GMA board, citing a need to focus on internal leadership and stewardship responsibilities. His departure comes at a time when the Newsboys face industry-wide scrutiny and significant fallout, including:
-
Capitol Christian Music Group severing ties with the band;
-
Multiple radio networks, including K-LOVE, pulling Newsboys' music from rotation;
-
Public criticism from former producer Steve Taylor, who described the alleged response to the 2014 incident as a "cover-up."
In addition to the recent resurfacing of abuse claims, Wes Campbell and several members of his family are named in a $5.4 million civil lawsuit filed by former pastor Randall Schrum, alleging defamation, conspiracy, and emotional distress related to a dispute at a Tennessee-based house church. The lawsuit, filed June 3, 2025, remains pending in Hickman County Circuit Court.
At present, the Newsboys have not issued a formal group statement on Campbell's resignation or the lawsuit. However, sources close to the band have confirmed that the team is "evaluating next steps" in light of recent events.
The Gospel Music Association has not yet commented publicly on Wes Campbell's resignation.
