Joel Smallbone To Star In Upcoming Historical Epic "Young Washington"

GRAMMY® Award-winning artist and actor Joel Smallbone of the multi-platinum duo for KING + COUNTRY is set to step into a pivotal role in the highly anticipated feature film Young Washington. Directed by Jon Erwin (Jesus Revolution, I Can Only Imagine), the film will chronicle the formative years of America's first president, George Washington, highlighting the events that shaped him into a leader.
Smallbone will portray William Fairfax, a member of the Virginia gentry whose friendship and rivalry with a young George Washington played a crucial role in the future president's early development. The cast also includes Academy Award® winner Sir Ben Kingsley as Governor Robert Dinwiddie, Andy Serkis as General Edward Braddock, and rising star William Franklyn-Miller as Washington himself.
Filming is scheduled to begin in summer 2025, with a theatrical release planned for Independence Day weekend 2026.
"It's an honor to be part of a story that not only captures the roots of leadership and sacrifice but also explores the complexities of human ambition and character," says Smallbone. "William Fairfax is a fascinating figure, and I'm excited to bring his story to life on screen."
Smallbone is an Australian-born, Nashville-based singer, songwriter, actor, and filmmaker. Best known as one half of the acclaimed Christian pop duo for KING + COUNTRY, alongside his brother Luke, Smallbone has earned multiple GRAMMY® Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and Dove Awards. Beyond music, he has carved a name for himself in film, starring in and producing projects such as Priceless (2016), the biblical musical Journey to Bethlehem (2023), and the inspirational drama Unsung Hero (2024), which he also co-wrote and co-directed.
With Young Washington, Smallbone expands his acting repertoire, joining a star-studded cast to tell a powerful story of courage, identity, and transformation set against the backdrop of early American history.
