The History of “Shout to the Lord” and Its Upcoming Reimagined Release Featuring CeCe Winans

Shout to the Lord, the iconic worship anthem penned by Darlene Zschech in 1993, has become a cornerstone of contemporary Christian worship. Now, Zschech and gospel legend CeCe Winans are joining forces for a powerful new rendition of the global worship classic, set to release on August 22, 2025, as part of the upcoming House of Worship project.
This collaboration reimagines the timeless song, blending Zschech's heartfelt worship with Winans' commanding vocals in a soul-stirring arrangement. Produced by Zschech and Michael W. Smith, with musical direction from Paul Mabury and John Hartley, the release honors the song's original spirit while offering a cinematic worship experience. The single will be available on all major streaming platforms starting August 22, 2025.
Originally written during a challenging season in Zschech's life, the song was inspired by Psalm 96 and composed in just 20 minutes at her childhood piano. It was first recorded live at Hills Christian Life Centre (now Hillsong Church) and released on the album People Just Like Us in 1994. Reflecting on its creation, Zschech says, "Truly, the song's greatness comes from Him as all true praise does." Its enduring impact has inspired worshippers worldwide and remains one of the most sung worship songs, reaching an estimated 30 million hearts weekly.
Over the years, Shout to the Lord has appeared on six Hillsong albums:
-
People Just Like Us (1994)
-
Shout to the Lord (1996)
-
Shout to the Lord 2000 (1998)
-
The Platinum Collection Vol. 1 (2000)
-
Shout to the Lord 2: The Platinum Collection Vol. 2 (2003)
-
Special Gold Edition (2008)
Additionally, the song features on two of Darlene Zschech's solo albums:
-
Revealing Jesus (2013)
-
Testament (2024), featuring Zoe Cameron and the Australian Christian Orchestra
Shout to the Lord has also been covered by numerous acclaimed artists across genres, including Don Moen, Linda Davis, Randy Travis, Guy Penrod, Shane & Shane, Caleb & Kelsey, Lincoln Brewster, Jim Brickman, Sandi Patty, John Tesh, Carman, Matt Redman, Skillet, Michael W. Smith, Chris Tomlin, and Natalie Grant.
The upcoming House of Worship version, featuring Zschech and CeCe Winans, promises a fresh, soulful arrangement of this beloved anthem, continuing its legacy and inspiring worshippers across generations.
