Website 4Chan under investigation for celebrity nude photos leak: Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and other personalities to file charges  

Website 4Chan is under FBI investigation as users of the website have posted nude photos of female celebrities on the site. Allegedly seen on the site were nude photos of "Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence, model-actress Kate Upton, and "Downton Abbey" star Jessica Brown Findlay.  

Live since 2003, 4Chan's origins were pretty inconspicuous. Then 15 years old, Christopher Poole created the website where Japanese manga and anime fans can share images, fan fiction, reviews and other related content.

Today, 4Chan is an anonymous forum, where members can talk about anything and everything under the sun.

Its popular "random" or "/b/" board, however, is a no-holds-barred area, where anyone can post nude photos, sexy videos, or any controversial material incognito.

The posts not restricted. Moderators, however, have put their foot down on child pornography; everyone has agreed that it is strictly off-limits. The /b/ board has a predominantly male audience.  Female users are asked to post images of intimate body parts, or leave the forum.

"The power lies in the community to dictate its own standards," Poole told The New York Times in 2008.

How the site was able to gather and post the celebrity nude photos remains a mystery.

Tech firm Apple is "actively investigating" leads saying that the celebrity nude photos were hacked from their iCloud service.

"We take user privacy very seriously and are investigating this report," said Apple spokeswoman Nat Kerris.

Law enforcement authorities are also hot on the issue's heels.

"The FBI is aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high-profile individuals, and is addressing the matter," said a spokesman in a prepared statement.
