Minecraft Being Bought By Microsoft: Mojang AB The Creators Of Minecraft Are In Talks With Microsoft Which Intends To Purchase The Minecraft Video Game
We have the latest news for you on the purchase of Minecraft by Microsoft. Mojang AB, the Swedish company behind the creation of 'Minecraft' Video game, valued over $2 billion is in talks with Microsoft and sources say that the deal to buy the company may be signed and sealed this week. When asked, Microsoft's spokesman declined to comment on the issue and likewise did Mojang chief executive Carl Manneh.
Once the deal is signed, Microsoft will have access to Mojang's customer base of more than 50 million, a hip demographic the company has had to struggle to achieve. The company's mobs, skeletons and its secrets will all go to Microsoft. The 35-year old founder, Markus Persson has always shunned outside investment for he is revered in the gaming community for railing publicly against big firms which include Microsoft, the news about the sale has come as a big surprise.
When and if Microsoft acquires the company, Minecraft video game could reinvigorate its 13-year old Xbox video game business for it will be a hit and will gain fans among the young (gamers). So far Mojang has sold over 50 million copies of 'Minecraft' since it was released in 2009 earning the company more than $100 million in profits last year alone in the sale of the game and merchandise.
The game is available on Xbox, Sony Corp PlayStations, PC and on smartphones. Minecraft's popularity rests mainly on its open-ended possibilities which allow players to build almost anything in a blocky, Lego-style world with many dangers such as zombies and giant spiders. The game has gained favors with children and Hard-core Gamers alike despite pixilated graphics that are a far cry from polished, action- based blockbusters like Microsoft's own 'halo' franchise.
If the deal pushes through, this will be Satya Nadella's (Microsoft's chief executive), first multibillion-dollar acquisition since he took office in February. This would also result in an unexpected plunge since he said that Xbox is not a core business for Microsoft. But Nadella further said that Microsoft views the video game as a way to expand the company's foothold in PC's and mobile.
