'Homeland Season 4' Premiere: Political Thriller Television Series Homeland Debuts Season 4 with Plot Turnaround
Showrunner Alex Gansa reveals a major reset in the fourth season of the television series, 'Homeland.' The season's premiere unfolds changes in the storyline - a new international setting, a wave of new characters, and a more espionage-centered emphasis rather than domestic drama.
'Homeland' is an American political thriller television series, based on the Israeli TV series created by Gideon Raff, Hatufim, which means Prisoners of War in English. It stars 2013 Golden Globe Award Winner Claire Danes as Central Intelligence Agency officer Carrie Mathison.
Among the most remarkable changes, the non-appearance of Nicholas Brody is the most controversial.
Nicholas Brody, played by Damian Lewis, was a POW who became a congressman and became a global fugitive and love interest of protagonist Carrie Matthison.
Gansa said, "It's a post-Brody 'Homeland.'"
"It was incumbent on us to take Carrie, this character that people have come to know over the past three years, and put her in a new geographical space and a new emotional space and to make that story feel compelling. It's up to all our fans and our critics to tell us if we're successful or not," he added.
There is also a notable setting shift in the fourth season of the American television drama series. Carrie Mathison is brought back on a new mission, in which she has been transferred to a new station from Washington D.C. to Middle East - specifically Afghanistan and Pakistan.
At the end of the third season, Carrie was appointed as station chief in Instanbul. But then, the city was ruled out because the government would have wanted approval of the script per episode, as per Ganza.
After a meeting this year with the writing staff and the intelligence community members in Washington D.C., it has been agreed upon that the action centers in Israel of Pakistan.
In the season premiere entitled, The Drone Queen", Carrie has been appointed leader in Kabul, Afghanistan. The CIA officer sanctions a fatal missile strike, which leads to a substantial damage and blaze. Carrie then proceeds to Pakistan to scrutinize. A medical student, played by Suraj Sharma of Life of Pi, survives the puzzle and may have the answer to the problem.
Witness the series as it unfolds exhilarating plot twists and new characters. Homeland is set to have its highly anticipated season 4 debut on October 5.
