Gotham Review, Recap: First Season Extended To 22 Episodes
Bruno Heller developed an American crime television series based on the characters appearing in and published by DC Comics in their Batman franchise. Gotham mainly feature characters Detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne. This new TV series stars Ben McKenzie as the young Gordon. Heller is the show's executive producer together with Danny Cannon. Cannon directed the pilot episode.
On May 5 this year, Gotham gained a series order from Fox and aired its first episode last Sept. 22. Originally, this would have worked as a clear-cut story of Gordon's former life on the Gotham City police force. The concept of the series is not only limited to include Bruce Wayne's character, but will also feature the original stories of numerous Batman villains. This includes Penguin, Catwoman, Riddler, Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Harvey Dent, Hugo Strange, Victor Zsaszz and Mr. Freeze. Initially, the first season order is composed of only 16 episodes but was eventually extended to 22 episodes.
The series started with having Detective James Gordon a new recruit in Captain Sarah Essen's Gotham City Police Department. He is then paired with Harvey Bullock. The pair was tasked to solve one of the highest-profile cases in the entire Gotham. This is the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
While the investigation is still rolling, Gordon meets Bruce Wayne. He is the son of the slayed victims. Bruce is now under the care of his butler Alfred Pennyworth. This situation pushes Gordon to really catch the puzzling killer.
As the investigation continues, there is a need for Gordon to meet head-on the mobstress Fish Mooney, a mafia headed by Carmine Falcone and several other Gotham's future villains like Edward Nygma, Oswald Cobblepot and Selina Kyle. In the end, Gordon got no other choice but to build an unexpected friendship with Wayne. He will have a significant part of shaping the boy's future especially in his fate of becoming a crusader.
Gotham has an amazing start and is considered as one of the most talked about shows this fall, loaded with several valid reasons. With the hard work and undisputable creativity of Heller and Cannon, they were able to make a remarkably rich world, with characters that captivates the viewers and a cast that gives life to the heroes and villains in a very engaging way.
