Tracing Days Introduces a New Video
With Matt Ely (Aerosmith, Melissa Etheridge) at the helm, the "Masquerade" video is set in a fantasy world and features the iconic sword from the movie Braveheart. Matt also directed and filmed the band's first video for "Life Outside," and the sword came courtesy of Scott Kinzy (who happens to be a friend and a fan of the band).
In a press release, frontman Lonnie Bos talked about the making of the video, saying, "It was amazing to paint on a video canvas with artists from all over the world. Allison Pitman, our voiceover talent, did a superb job, and her experience with Disney and others brought a kind of gravity to the video that was just great. Danilo Recevic, from Milan, Italy, provided the drawings for our animations, which really took the video to the next level."
The talent behind the scenes of the video included art director and color expert Stephen Downer, who has worked with DC Comics, local filmmaker Jennings Barmore, a major contributor who provided additional footage and all did all of the editing, pilot Wayne Walker, who helped with aerial footage, MSU Shakespeare in the Park, who provided the costumes and SCA, a campus group that provided the armor and actors for all of the live action sequences.
The song and video itself play out what happens when we wear masks with the world so they can't see (and judge) the true people we are. "I began to realize at one point, I'd spent most of my life pretending, and hiding behind these masks," explained Lonnie Bos. "This song goes after that fear of being known, the temptation to find identity in stuff or success, and the vanity that follows if we keep pretending."
